»Heinzelmännchen« scurry around in Schumann, and Brahms' peasant dances involve one or two glasses of beer – if you only listen carefully enough! Johannes Klumpp shared the background, details and anecdotes of this year's programme with the audience at the Lecture Concert.

Walking Concerts

24th of July 2022

From Vivaldi to Ullmann to »Tico Tico«: On Sunday, the musical route led through a best-of of all Walking Concerts. Johannes Klumpp connected the individual stations with good wishes for the future of the SMA - and at the end stood a sign for peace in Europe: the entire International Academy Orchestra played »Melody« by the Ukrainian composer Myroslaw Skoryk.

Candlelight Concert

23rd of July 2022

Robert Neumann and Richard Putz impressively demonstrated that piano and marimba share musical similarities, but can also stand in thrilling ambivalence to each other. While the sun was slowly setting outside, they created a very special atmosphere in the baroque main hall of the castle – illuminated only by the flickering light of hundreds of candles.

Serenade in the Gardens

20th of Juli 2022

Hot, hotter, Serenade… The Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen, Johannes Klumpp, and the crossover band Uwaga! braved yesterday‘s heat and filled the castle terrace with an innovative programme that combined Wagner with Klezmer and Mendelsohn with Jazz. And in good-old Serenade-fashion, Johannes Klumpp also left the conductor’s desk and took up an instrument once more.

Master Class Podium

19th of July 2022

Take four aspiring conductors, an energy-charged chamber orchestra, a trumpeter, who is a dear friend of the SMA, and a masterly pianist, who also happens to be the founder of the entire festival – and there you have the recipe for a terrific master class finale! Many thanks to all of you!

Master Class Conducting

(in colaboration with Forum Dirigieren / Deutscher Musikrat)

16th – 19th of July 2022

How do you align shoulder, elbow and wrist movements? Do you conduct Mozart differently from Rachmaninoff? And how do you lead and shape an orchestra? Johannes Klumpp has been teaching four young conductors in the Master Class. The fruits of their intense studies can be enjoyed in the master class podium.

Opening Concert »Junge Oper«

Friday & Saturday, 15th & 16th of July 2022

Grand kick-off to the 30th: For the third time in the history of the SMA, an opera was staged at Hundisburg castle. With Mozart's »Così fan tutte«, Junge Mitteldeutsche Kammeroper opened the festival and brought with them the entire range of grand emotions.

Two young couples: In love, engaged and happy. Until the men, boasting with confidence, bet on the fidelity of their women. The perfectly orchestrated, semi-serious chaos that unrolls in »Così fan tutte« shows that there are no easy ways to happiness. Neither in matters of love nor of life.
